St Wilfrid’s Year 7 and 8 squads were entered into the Sportshall Athletics Area tournament on Wednesday 15th February where 6 schools took part. The field events events included Speed Bounce, Vertical Jump, Triple Jump, Long Jump and Shot in the field eve. The track events included an obstacle relay, 4×2 lap relay, 8 lap parlaaf (2 students sharing 8 laps between them) and 2, 4, and 6 lap races. Each student that competed had a go at a field and track event at the very least with some competing in as many as 5 events over the course of 100 minutes.
St Wilfrid’s put in squads for all categories and our students were enthused with the teamwork and camaraderie in such an enclosed spectacle. With cheers from all around swirling in the background, students competed for their schools and each other.
We had some outstanding performances throughout the tournament which included Kenan clearing the shot putt and triple jump are; Isaac winning his 4 lap race; Dominic and Christian jumping nearly half a metre higher than their reach; Jamilla and Shannon leaping furthest in the long jump and Zainab throwing a great distance.
Overall, we did not win an individual year group but we were in the medals and showed an encouraging team spirit.
- Year 7 girls finished 3rd
- Year 7 boys finished 3rd
- Year 8 girls finished 4th (pretty good with a squad of 5 from a possible 8)
- Year 8 boys finished 2nd only 6 points behind the leaders.
A big thank you to Miss Hannah Jennings for organising the teams and running practice events for the students.
