Girls Unbeaten in Regional Futsal Round

On Tuesday 21st February our Y10/11 girls travelled  up to Leyton Orient to participate in the regional round of the Kinder +Sport Futsal tournament. St Wilfrid’s were representing Crawley Town who made up one of the five teams that arrived to play in a round robin league before the top two battled it out to head to the National Finals.

The team were in buoyant mood with a strong squad. Their first game against Southend started with the opposition taking the lead but the team soon took control as Josie (2), Libby and Megan all scored. Southend, with no subs to help out, tired and our superior passing ability and strength shone through. Hollie was full of bravery in goal, her first action was to come out to take the ball and the player which proved to be a sign of things to come.

We dominated the next game against Dagenham & Redbridge with Josie giving the team an early lead. Several opportunities came and went and Dagenham & Redbridge’s attacks were thwarted by strong defence from Emily H, Billie and Emily S.  Megan came off the bench and scored a screamer into the top corner, a lovely way to complete a 2-0 win.

A solid display against Gillingham was to follow. Chloe, Emily S and Emily H, all getting shots off at goal. A couple of mistakes at the back let in Gillingham but Hollie was again outstanding coming out and claiming the ball. It was Megan who slotted home to give the team a 1-0 win.

The final league game was against Brentford. Billie and Emily H worked well in defence and Hollie was strong in goal, giving nothing away and showing good handling. Megan again came off the bench to show some quick feet that allowed her space to slot home. Another 1-0 win and overall group winners.

The final was again against Brentford and both teams started with strong teams, but it was St Wilfrid’s girls who made all the play. Megan, Libby, Josie and Billie were not giving much away and the superior strength and fitness levels were showing, however we could not break down a defence that was set up well to keep the girls from breaking through. The goal did eventually come when Billie played the ball to Josie who passed on to Megan down the right, Megan went past a defender before driving the ball into the area for Libby to score. A goal that she thoroughly deserved for all her efforts since her goal in the first game. Brentford battled on and some good saves from Hollie and some last ditch tackles were made as it got tense in the last few minutes. But we held on for a deserved victory.

Congratulations to Libby, Josie, Chloe, Megan, Emily S, Emily H, Billie and Hollie for their victory and they head up to the Nationals in Derby in March. Megan will unfortunately be on international duty with the Republic of Ireland but we thank her for the support with the girls and wish her well.
