St Wilfrid’s Keystage 4 boys travelled to Leyton Orient on Monday 6 February to take part in the Regional round of the Futsal Competition.
Our team were representing the tournament as Crawley Town and had a slow start with a loss in the first game against Southend United 3-1 (Harry) and then a draw against Dagenham & Redbridge 1-1 (Fintan).
With a change to the formation of the team St Wilfrid’s dominated their next game against Chelsea FC which resulted in a 0-0 draw. They then played Brentford in a game they should have won, but some poor defending let Brentford take control and they lost 2-1. The final game in their group was against Leyton Orient and the team knew if they won they would be through to the semi-finals. The team started well and Jamie scored within 30 seconds and Aslam made it 2-0 30 seconds later. Their domination continued with Fintan scoring twice resulting in a 4-0 win and putting the team through to the semi-finals on goal difference.
The semi-final was against the leaders, Dagenham & Redbridge. It was a really tight game which saw some great action from Fillipe in goal and the team battled well. Fintan went on to score “the goal of the tournament” which saw him do a solo run, jinxing around 3 defenders before elegantly slotting the ball home. The match culminated in another goal which saw Jamie pass the ball to Fintan who again proved clinical with a goal that took us into the Final.
The Final was against Southend which needed great team spirit and camaraderie as the team needed to put on quite a fight. Fillipe had his work cut out in goal and played superbly and despite great attacks there was no goal action. Finally, a corner led to pressure on Southend’s defender from Morgan which resulted in a deflection carrying the ball into the net. With a couple of minutes to go, a breakdown of Southend’s attack saw some great team play with some fantastic passes which saw Jimmy score taking the team to 2-0 and victory!
The team will now travel to Derby on Saturday 18th March to take part in the National Futsal Final.
Congratulations to the team:
Aslam Ul Haq, Clinford Alexis, Morgan Hayward, Fillipe Goncalves, Jamie Buchanan, Fintan Scarffe-Cody, Harry Watts, Callum Warner and Jimmy McGrath.
