St Wilfrid’s has been celebrating its student’s achievements this week by inviting them to join Mr Morris and other members of the Leadership Team for a Celebration Breakfast in their honour in the Partnership Learning Centre. The nominations for this term’s high achievers were, as ever, overwhelming.  The students gathered in the Partnership Learning Centre before lessons for juice, muffins and some fruit and a relaxed chat.  Mr Morris congratulated each student personally and  members of the Leadership Team were also there to pass on their own congratulations. [caption id="attachment_370746" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Year 8 Students"][/caption] The Celebration Breakfast celebrates not just high academic or sporting achievements, but all those students who had excelled their personal best in some way.  That could be extra effort in school work, a real turnaround in behaviour, impeccable presentation, a 100% attendance record or any other form of hard work and self-discipline that made them a good role-model for their peers.   As part of WordFest and run in collaboration with Waterstones, our gifted and talented English students were invited to meet two childrens authors, CJ Daugherty and Ruth Warburton. [caption id="attachment_301459" align="aligncenter" width="624" caption="Authors discuss their books with St Wilfrid's Students"][/caption]   The students went to a workshop with the authors who spoke about their independent work.  Ruth has written the alluring paranormal romance ‘A Witch in Winter’ and CJ Daugherty is the author of the wonderfully tense and gripping thriller ‘Night School’.  This was the first time that Waterstones have run such an event as CJ and Ruth are signed to different publishers which made the event a cross-publisher. This is something very rare and therefore the students were very lucky to have been in attendance. [caption id="attachment_301461" align="aligncenter" width="624" caption="Ruth & CJ sign copies of their books for students"][/caption] Both CJ Daugherty and Ruth Warburton are naturals at public speaking and, more importantly, had our students totally enthralled whilst talking about their inspirations along with their journey to writing their exciting novels. After a short break the students then had an enriching workshop session with the authors to experience writing a themed story in the thriller genre.  The students also had the opportunity of purchasing the authors books and having the books personally signed for them. Mrs Harrison, who organised the event at St Wilfrid's comments, "This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet CJ and Ruth and to get an insight into the world of book writing and to have a go at writing a story in the same genre with the help of the authors." WORDfest is Crawley’s second festival dedicated to celebrating words and writing in their many forms. Spearheaded by Waterstone’s County Mall Booksellers and Crawley Library. Augustine reign in the Boys badminton competition whilst Catherine take the Girls title. [caption id="attachment_289727" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="House Captain Brian Wins Over Deputy Kuba"][/caption] Some exhilarating Badminton was in the offering this week as the Boys and Girls House Badminton took shape as the week progressed. The competition was ruthless as wins of 15-2 were in evidence in a lot of results.   The girls badminton saw a tight final as Rebecca Baines (C) defeated Lydia Bishop (D) with Erin Witton (C) finishing 3rd The boys badminton had considerably more entries and it was Augustine who proved efficient with the racket, Daniel Betch, House Captain Brian Povey and Deputy House Captain Kuba Jasko along with Francis’ Sam Jordan breaking the Augustine dominance. The semi finals pitted Sam against Brian and with plenty of unforced errors noted it kept the tie close but Brian defeated Sam 15-13 House Captain Brian played off against his Deputy Kuba with Brian emerging victorious in another close encounter. The 3rd / 4th play off was a matter of stuttering to the finish as Sam beat Kuba to break the Augustine chances of a 123.  (15-10) [caption id="attachment_289726" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Daniel beats Brian to be House Victor"][/caption] The final was a tight match in which Daniel and Brian were playing good shot after bad as the nerves were hitting home.
