Year 12 Scrub Up Well!

Year 12 enjoyed designing a new soap and packaging on 2nd February as part of a Business and Enterprise immersion day challenge.  Emma Castle and Karen Constant from Lush, famous for its fresh handmade cosmetics joined St Wilfrid’s for the afternoon.  Their role was to decide which team best identified their market, worked out their costs and produced the best soap, packaging and exhibition stand to show their work.

Students had just three lessons to research likely customers and then design a soap that would meet their needs.  Various colours, shapes, fragrances and even glitter were available to the designers, but costs were attached to every decision.  After enjoying a lesson donning aprons and melting and mixing their own soap recipes together, student then raced to put together a display in the hall to show off their hard work.  “It was awesome!” said one student, “I loved smelling all the different fragrances and deciding what moulds to use.  Our display was the best!”

The judges spent over an hour looking at all the displays, and in one case listening to the song composed to advertise a soap.  “The students all worked so hard, it was really difficult to decide who should win!” said Emma.  “In the end we got it down to three teams, but choosing the winner from that was tricky. In the end we chose ‘under the sea’ soap as not only did they write a song, but their costs and research was excellent.  They really worked as a team,” said Karen.  “Hope Soap’ was my personal favourite,” said Business and Community Manager Ms Myers, “I liked the ethical dimension to their product and really think they had a viable idea.  The winners were excellent though, and I can see why they were chosen.”

The winners received £10 of Lush vouchers each, and the runners up ‘Hope Soap’ received a Lush goody bag.  Many thanks to Emma and Karen from Lush for supporting this event.
