St Wilfrid's Girls Continue Success
- Stopping Just Short Of Winning
Our Year 7 and 8 girls travelled to the Weald to defend the competition they won last year at this age group. There were 9 teams entered, including Hazelwick, Millais, Sackville, Warden Park, The Weald, Oriel and Ifield, and they were split into two pools with the top two from each league going into the semi finals.
St Wilfrid's started off against a strong Warden Park and despite going into the lead through Molly Carpenter we were pegged back with two late goals to lose our opener 2-1. We then drew with Oriel 0-0 despite having many chances to win the game. With us unsure now of having a chance to reach the semi finals our girls relaxed and began to play some good football. They beat Ifield 4-0 (2og, Abbie Crawley and Casey Gunning-Shaw) and then went into a tough encounter with Hazelwick. We went 1-0 up early with Abbie Crawley scoring and then Ellie Russell gave us a 2 goal lead. Hazelwick hit back before Molly scored. Hazelwick began to apply the pressure and scored to make it 3-2 but some good saves from new goalkeeper Georgia Coxall saw us win. Surprisingly this put us through to the semi finals.
The semi-final was against Sackville who were a stern opposition and in the end a 0-0 draw after extra time was a fair reflection of two teams working hard with some good saves from both goalkeepers. It went to penalties which St Wilfrid's won 6-5. The final was against Warden Park again, we started strongly and Casey gave us the lead with a well taken goal and all looked good until a deflected shot gave Georgia no chance to level the score. And then we gave an opponent too much time to strike the ball cleanly past Georgia who had played really well. In the end it was the same story as the first game, 2-1 loss, but a fantastic effort from the girls who, Mr Iddles and parent helper Helen Carpenter, were very proud of their achievement.
