St Wilfrid’s Year 7 Boys Are North Area 6-a-side Champions

St Wilfrid's sent over two teams to the North Area 6-a-side boy’s football tournament held at Ifield CC. Two dropouts before the tournament meant that both teams played as a 6 rather than having a sub.

There were 9 teams in attendance with us having two teams, Hazelwick (2), Holy Trinity (2), Thomas Bennett, Oriel and the hosts ICC.

Both teams played their games at the same time making it difficult to switch between the two teams but it must have worked as St Wilfrid’s 'A' won their first game 2-0 with goals from Frankie May. The 'B' team did not fare as well losing 1-0 to the favourites Oriel.

The 'A' team went on to draw there next two games vs. ICC and Hazelwick 'A' before seeing off Thomas Bennett 1-0 (May) in the final group game to go through as runners up. The 'B' team recovered from their loss to draw with Hazelwick 'B' and then beat Holy Trinity 'A' 1-0 (Cass) to go through also as group runners up.

The semi's saw St Wilfrid's 'B' battle with Hazelwick 'A' and did themselves proud throughout but eventually succumbed to a penalty losing 1-0. The 'A' team played the favourites Oriel and drew 0-0 meaning a sudden death penalty shootout. Frankie May, David O'Doherty and Jon Schofield Quintas all scored to put themselves into the final to play Hazelwick 'A'.

The final was just as tight as the group game with both teams unable to break each other down and so another penalty shootout was the result. Frankie and David again put their penalties away before Arthur Sewell, who had not let in a goal in open play, saved to allow Jon Schofield-Quintas the opportunity to win the competition for St Wilfrid's which he did with confidence.

A fantastic achievement from both sets of boys who really put in the effort throughout, they did the school and themselves proud! They join the girls with being the Area 6's champions!
