St Wilfrid’s Present Godspell

 

St Wilfrid’s School is proud to present its school production of Godspell, a celebration of life, human frailty, and forgiveness.  The production will the first that St Wilfrid’s have held in it fantastic new facilities and the production runs from Thursday 9th July until Saturday 11th July 2009.

Staff and students at St Wilfrid’s have been hard at work rehearsing for this musical by Stephen Schwartz which is based on a series of parables based on the Gospel of Matthew which are interspersed with a variety of modern music set to lyrics from traditional hymns.   

St Wilfrid’s version of the musical has a modern twist and is set sometime in the near future when a war breaks out - a final war!    A video message is received from a single man (whom we later learn to be Jesus) explaining that the world was created and man put in charge.   It is then shown how man has destroyed the planet finishing with an explosion that wipes out most of mankind.   A few remain and they, with Jesus’ help, begin to start a new community again.

The costumes and musical accompaniment will have also have a modern feel with the costumes designed to be of a retro punk look and the music heavily influenced by the rock score of the 2001 tour version of Godspell along with the school’s original ideas.The cast consists of 40 students from Years 7 to 12. The lead role of Jesus is played by Adam Lay, a Year 8 student with the rest of the cast supporting.
